PORTFOLIO

WIKIPEDIA, AMONG THE TEN MOST VISITED WEBSITES IN THE WORLD, IS SUMMARIZED AS THE INTERNET’S LARGEST AND MOST POPULAR GENERAL REFERENCE WORK. YET AMONG ITS OVER FIVE MILLION ENGLISH ARTICLES, THERE’S CURRENTLY ONE DETAILING THE DIVINE FEMININE — IT’S ABOUT THE AMERICAN RAPPER MAC MILLER’S FOURTH STUDIO ALBUM. A GOOGLE SEARCH DIVERSIFIES THE TERM, CLASSIFYING IT AS: THE ESSENCE OF A GENDER-NEUTRAL GOD, THE RECOGNITION OF FEMININE VALUE AND THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF MOTHER EARTH, AMONGST MORE THAN A MILLION EXPLANATIONS. THE DIVINE FEMININE, SOMETIMES DESCRIBED AS THE FEMININE MYSTERY OF CREATION, IT CONFIRMS, IS AS DIFFICULT TO UNWRAP AS IT IS TO DEFINE.

This lack of clear archival legacy, Roanne Adams proclaims, is lost in the annals of a patriarchal history. Roanne’s latest venture Romance Journal — she’s also the founder of the creative studio RoAndCo — is a response to this loss. Each issue delves into human experiences through 10 women, “exploring our relationship to ourselves, our emotions, our inner lives and our collective conscious,” she says. Issue 1 details the role of emotion in life and work while Issue 2 features resistance as a state of feeling. Underscoring it all is Roanne's desire for the world to “move in the direction of true equality for all.” As for the romance… “It conjures up feelings of love,” she explains, “but there is no love without fear and the word romance can also sound a bit dark… It embodies the complexity of life.”

HOW DO YOU DEFINE THE ROMANCE IN ROMANCE JOURNAL?
I define the “romance” in the name as a state of feeling and being self-aware through getting in touch with your thoughts and emotions. Self-realization allows you to decipher between your ego-voice and the voice that comes from your truth, or your heart. There is something really beautiful about the word romance. It conjures up feelings of love, but there is no love without fear and the word romance also can sound a bit dark. I like that it embodies the complexity of life.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE COLLECTIVE CONSCIOUSNESS?
I believe that we are all conscious beings and that we are all linked through one universal consciousness. The planet is a reflection of this consciousness. As humans, we are either guided by fear or by love; every day we have the ability to choose one or the other. At this point in time, we need to advocate for a move in the direction of love. This means to realize that everything — every act, every thought— affects the whole. We are constantly bombarded by fear in the media and advertising so it’s not easy to hear your own truth or voice. Our inner voice is the truth and the voice of life — the voice to which life is waiting for us to listen. It just needs us to be present to hear it.

(lyrics are needed)

She is benediction

She is addicted to thee

She is the root connection

She is connecting with he

Here I go and I don't know why

I flow so ceaselessly

Could it be he's taking over me

I'm dancing barefoot

Headin' for a spin

Some strange music draws me in

It makes me come up like some heroine

She is sublimation

She is the essence of thee

She is concentrating on

He who is chosen by she

Here I go when I don't know why

I spin so ceaselessly

Could it be he's taking over me

I'm dancing barefoot

Headin' for a spin

Some strange music drags me in

Makes me come up like some heroine

She is re-creation

She intoxicated by thee

She has the slow sensation that

He is levitating with she

Here I go when I don't know why

I spin so ceaselessly

'Til I lose my sense of gravity

I'm dancing barefoot

Heading for a spin

Some strange music draws me in

Makes me come up like some heroine

Oh God I fell for you

Oh God I fell for you

Oh God I fell for you

Oh God I fell for you

Oh God I fell for you

Oh God I fell for you

Oh God I fell for you

Oh God I fell for you

Oh God I fell for you

Oh God I fell for you

Oh God I fell for you

WHAT ROLE DOES IMAGERY PLAY IN COMMUNICATING THE ETHOS OF ROMANCE JOURNAL?
As an art director, my number one goal is to create a beautifully art directed piece and collaborate with photographers who share the vision. Issue 1 was photographed exclusively by Robin Stein. That relationship was integral to creating a cohesive look for the publication. Robin is both a still-life and portrait photographer, which was perfect because the only parameters I set for Issue 1 were that I wanted ten portraits of the women and ten still-life images of flowers. The still-life images are really what's communicating the idea of Romance Journal and each issue’s theme. We decided that each floral still life would represent a different emotion — from joy to love to envy and fear. The images act as metaphors for the theme. We decided from the get-go that we would put a still-life image on the cover, to do something different from most magazines and to not give more importance to one woman over another. I couldn't imagine having to chose which of the ten women were more worthy of a cover image.

ISSUE 2 FOCUSES ON RESISTANCE. ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR THEMES YOU WOULD LIKE TO TACKLE IN FUTURE ISSUES?
I’m formulating an idea for Issue 3 that centers around what the future of feminine means. I'm hopeful and curious as to whether we can break free from patriarchy and move in the direction of true equality for all genders. I’m interested in the direction that the reinvigorated feminist movement is headed, and how it ties into better understanding the strength that lies in femininity. Feminists of the past borrowed the idea of strength from the masculine version of strength. I’m coming to understand that we don’t have to lead the way we’ve been taught, through the patriarchical system. As a boss and female leader, I realize that there is room for a more nurturing approach to leadership. I’ve also been researching the feminine mystery of creation, reclaiming our feminine power and the lost art of the feminine rituals. Rituals have been taken from our culture, the days of the high priestesses — their temples and ceremonies are long gone. And because the wisdom of the feminine was not written down, it has been lost in history.
