TENNESSEE THOMAS

INTERVIEW

PHOTOGRAPHED IN NEW YORK CITY
BY Skye PARROTT

THE 2016 PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARIES HAVE THUS FAR PRODUCED FEW REASSURING FACTS, OR CONCRETE CANDIDATES. BUT AS BOTH THE REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS CONTINUE TO ACRIMONIOUSLY DEBATE THEIR CHOICE CONTENDER, AT LEAST ONE UPLIFTING TREND HAS EMERGED: STRONG ENGAGEMENT AMONG YOUNG VOTERS. YOUNG DEMOCRAT TURNOUT RIVALS, AND IN MANY CASES EXCEEDS, THAT OF 2008, WHEN OBAMA ROUSED THE MASSES. THIS TIME AROUND, THE PARTY'S YOUNGEST MEMBERS HAVE AGAIN PICKED AN EARLY FAVORITE: BERNIE SANDERS, WHO THEY CHAMPION FOR HIS OUTSIDER AUTHENTICITY AND SEEMINGLY UNWAVERING POLICY POSITIONS.

This electrifying appeal, as Tennessee Thomas proves, even extends beyond national lines. Despite her English roots, Tennessee “feels the Bern” and wants others to, too. So much so that she has transformed the Deep End Club, her shop/community clubhouse in New York’s East Village, into an unofficial headquarters for the Vermont senator’s campaign. There, she hosts talks, teach-ins and discussions about the critical issues facing young voters – a laundry list that includes female reproductive rights, fracking, the cost of education, income inequality, comprehensive healthcare…to name just a few. And in her spare time, she takes up her day job, as an in-demand drummer and DJ.
