In 2015 alone, Hisham helped organize a large-scale performance in London at Barbican with the group Boredoms, performed with YOSHIMIO (from Boredoms and OOIOO) and Aya (from OOIOO) under the name YOARA, and completed a short musical residency in conjunction with The Vinyl Factory and Doug Aitken's Station to Station. Next, he recorded with patten from Warp Records and paired with Dan D’Errico to create electronic music under the name Zanzo. He also jammed with his group IIII (read four, comprised of Hisham, Brian Chase of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ryan Sawyer and Ben Vida). In the remaining hours, Hisham began curating monthly shows at Trans-Pecos (the final exhibition opens in September), completing a Soft Circle record and helping his friend Molly Surno on a visual/sound performance at BAM. In the studio, he is digging into new visual works and sound sculptures.
DESCRIBE YOUR CURRENT EMOTIONAL STATE?
Kind of stressed, yet blessed.
WHAT DO YOU DO BEST?
Make things: art, music, food.
IF YOU COULD RELIVE ONE MOMENT OF YOUR CHILDHOOD, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Going to Sado Island on the western side of mainland Japan with my family. The Japanese side of my family is from Niigata, which is close to there.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD GIVE YOUR 20-YEAR-OLD SELF?
Start getting focused on what you want to do with the rest of your life early. And get a driver's license!

YOUR MOST PRECIOUS OBJECT
WHAT WAS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE KISS?
Probably my first one with my first girlfriend. I didn't kiss till I was in junior high; I know, pretty late. I grew up in Tokyo so things start a bit slower there in terms of that kind of stuff. I remember it being super awkward and I didn't know what I was doing, yet it ruled my world.
WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE YOUR MOST ADMIRABLE VIRTUE?
I feel very open to virtues of all people on the planet. I am mixed race and grew up never fitting into one culture; I was always on the cusp, trying to fit in as a kid. Through my experiences, I've learned to be accepting of many viewpoints on global topics. Sometimes you can't understand a choice a person or government makes because you come from a completely different culture. One cannot judge a person or situation based only on one's own viewpoint. One must try to understand that each culture has its own values, traditions and history.
WHAT JOB WOULD YOU BE DOING IF NOT THE ONE YOU DO?
I might be jobless and homeless.
WHAT IS THE LAST BOOK YOU READ?
I practically never finish books, but I'm currently reading "The Eye's Mind: Bridget Riley — Collected Writings 1965-2009" and "True to Life: Twenty-Five Years of Conversations with David Hockney."

A SONG YOU'RE EMBARRASSED TO LOVE
NEW YORK HAS CHANGED ENORMOUSLY, AND WE HEAR A LOT ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE HATE ABOUT IT NOW. WHAT DO YOU STILL LOVE ABOUT THE CITY?
I love how immediate everything is. I love hearing about a performance or opening just hours before it happens and being able to go to it. I love the proximity to friends, rooftop hangs and backyard grilling. There is so much culture here that one experiences moment to moment, and I love that all walks of life cross paths all day.
WHAT IS THE WORST RISK YOU'VE EVER TAKEN?
Going down an avalanche-prone snowy cap without knowing what was on the other side.
WHAT IS A MEAL THAT REMINDS YOU OF HOME?
My mom's ginger soy sauce chicken wings... I'm drooling as I write this.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN THE WORLD?
At the moment I'd say Teppen in Tokyo's Nakameguro area.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CAR?
I've never had a driver's license.
